About our town - Skipton is still today a busy market town famous as being "The Gateway To The Dales", Dales are just a footstep to the north town. Originally the towns wealth came from the sheep and wool trade, its intact Norman Castle being built over 900 years ago. The Industrial Revolution brought the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and the building of mills, making Skipton an important trading centre. Even today the colourful market in the High Street still runs every Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat. Our town also has a shopping centre, Craven Court where most retail chain stores can be found, also the High Street has a mix of smaller specialist local shops. Every little small street leading from the High Street contains shops and places to explore with walks along the canal which also offers daily canal boat cruises.
